1st Couteau Scouts Sail During Spring Break

The 1st Couteau Venturer Scouts sailed for five days and four nights this spring break on a tall ship with the “Sail and Life Training Society” out of Victoria harbour. The scouts took an active role in all aspects of sailing the ship and life aboard: raising and lowering sails, steering the ship, standing watch, and helping the crew. In addition to being trained aboard a large sailing vessel they learned chart work and navigation, rope work and knots, theory of sailing and rules of the road. Some of the highlights were: climbing the “shrouds” and “whiskers”, “hauling” and “tailing”, doing high jumps in the bow spray out in Haro stright, swimming in Esquimalt harbour, those wobbly dory’s, and the two hikes ashore!
